Notes:
Peter married Anne Patching in 1814, and then Elizabeth Patience Patching in 1827. He was living at Hunts Farm in Withyham, and appears on the 1838 census, although he is shown as having died in April 1838. He had 2 sons with Anne, John in 1815, and Thomas in 1822. See his will attached. He leaves his brother-in-law Obediah Hall, husband of his sister Maria, as his executor, along with his good friend John Turner of Withyham, yeoman. Peter, Obadiah Hall and John Turner all appear in the 1832 and 1837 polling records, and Obadiah Hall and John Turner appear on the 1842 polling record after Peters death, John Turner occupying a property called Summerford. Peter and his siblings Maria and William are legatees in the will of his grandfather John Avis, 1728 to 1806, and it was through that that I found the existence of their father Peter, who died in 1803. I will check for further details at the Lewes Records Office. I believe that mother was Fanny, and that she was buried 29/3/1793 in Withyham, and that they had the following children, who in the will are referred to as the children of Peter Avis deceased, late son of John Avis. Maria, baptised in Withyham 15/9/1788 (received 300 pounds in her grandfather John Avis will of 1806). Peter, baptised in Withyham 6/5/1790 (received 300 pounds in his grandfather John Avis will of 1806). William, baptised in Horsted Keynes 23/8/1794 (received 300 pounds in his grandfather John Avis will of 1806). Peters father is believed to have remarried to Elizabeth Weller in Withyham 4/2/1796, and his 1803 will leaves everything to her. I have bought a copy of a book, Historical Notes of Withyham, Hartfield and Ashdown Forest, by Charles Nassau Sutton, rector of Withyham, published originally in 1902. I believe it is him being referred to as being in the Withyham church choir singing bass. In 1825 he was a tenant of a portion of Hendall, in 1837 he was a tenant of Hunts Farm according to the polling records. His son John Avis was the tenant at Hunts Farm in the 1842 polling records, and is still there in the 1851 census.
