Date of death taken from photo of his gravestone. George married Phyllis M Curtis Q1 1932 in the East Grinstead district, and had Peter, Maureen, Jean, and Doreen, according to Kathleen. They actually had George (known as Peter), who married Margaret Ann Tiller Q1 1955, then Jean, who married Ronald Tiller Q3 1954, and they have both now passed away, then Pauline, who married Peter Austin in Q2 1954, then Susan, who did not survive, then Maureen, who married Michael Farley in Q1 1963. Phyllis passed away August 1998 in the Uckfield registration district. Maidstone Records Office baptism records for St Johns in Groombridge shows a baptism on 27/8/1933 of a George Peter David Avis, born 22/03/1933 to George and Phyllis, of Corseley Road, Groombridge - the father was a gardener.It is believed that Ruby helped to look after the children of George and Phyllis, after leaving where she had been in service, and before marrying Fred. Visit to Lewes Records Office 22/2/2011 found George, born 1909, christening record in the Groombridge St. Thomas parish register - his father George was a labourer at the time. Vicar was Robert Fisher.16/03/2011 - Bev and Gill went to Groombridge for mum's birthday, and met a Mr Gerry Robson of 12 Bird in Hand Street, Old Groombridge, who knew George Avis as 'codger' - he too had been born in Corseley Road, and later lived at 8 Bird in Hand Street, Old Groombridge, after Fred, Mary and Marian had lived there. (He also played football in a team with mum's brothers George and Fred, and showed us a photo of the team). This photo has now been scanned in and is viewable against George and Fred. George is in the back row, third from the right. Fred is in the back row, on the right-hand end.Gerry Robson, who provided the photo, is in the front row, on the right-hand end. George gave away his sister Evelyn at her marriage to John Daniel Richards, see him in the photo.
