Notes:
According to her marriage certificate, Kathleen lived at 9 Corseley Road, Groombridge, with her mum and dad, and her occupation was 'cook(domestic)' The witnesses at her wedding to Ernest were J. D. Richards (Kathleens sister Evelyns husband, John Daniel Richards, giving Kathleen away instead of her father who she had paid to keep away), and L. F. Shonfeld(believed to have been Ernests best man. See the attached photo of the Groombridge Home Guard - Louis Frederick Shonfeld is believed to be second from the left in the back row). Evelyns son Christopher confirms that it is his father in the wedding photo on the left at the back, and Gerry Robson of Groombridge confirms that it is Lou Shonfeld partly hidden at the back on the right-hand side). See the attached map for Rostherne. Kathleen was in service here as a cook and that Ernest also went to work there as a chauffeur after their marriage in August 1937. See the attached newspaper article about their wedding. AMS6383/4/15 looked at 8/2/2011 at East Sussex Records Office, Lewes - The Amazing History of Groombridge Methodist Church 1803 - 1992. Sunday School was 8.30 - 12.00, then 1.30 - 4.00 each week%252525252521 AMS6383/6/2 looked at also - the Sunday School Librarians Register - saw entries for Kathleens brothers Fred and George Avis for 1921 approx - Fred borrowed 13 books in one quarter, and George borrowed 5 books. On another page, Fred borrowed 1 book and Kathleen 5 books in that quarter. A few pages later Kathleen borrowed 1 book, then later Ruby borrowed 6 books, then a page later, 1 book. Looked at AMS6383/5/1 - the register of baptisms from 25/2/1913 to 23/8/1981 - there are no entries for any AVIS.Kathleen was the informant when her father, George Avis, died in April 1946 in East Malling. In the photo of the Sunday School outing to Brighton, the lady at the back on the right-hand side under where it says ICES is Kathleen's mum, Caroline, and the very tall man with a moustache a couple to the left of her is Mr Standing, who was a signalman on the railway and organised the Sunday School. At each station he is said to have got out and marched up and down singing red or yellow, black or white, each are precious in his sight. See attached sheets about where Ernest, Kathleen and family lived over the years.
