Notes:
George's first marriage was to Elizabeth M. Avis - showing in 1891 census and living with her(aged 21) and their daughter, Emma E. Avis, 8 months, born in Withyham, all lodging at 12 Corseley Road Groombridge (he later lived with Caroline in the same road). Marriage to Elizabeth registered April to June 1890 in Ticehurst Kent. Witnesses at wedding to Caroline were Henry Robert Fenner and Robert Fenner. For family tree for George Avis going back to 1610 search on www.theweald.org and enter his name. This information was given to that website by Yvonne Brautigam, who is the great-granddaughter of George Avis, via his daughter Elizabeth Grace, who married Tom Dunstall, and her daughter Audrey. That tree shows George as being born in Rotherfield, but his birth certificate shows he was born in Groombridge, Withyham.16/03/2011 - Bev and Gill went to Groombridge for mum's birthday, and met a Mr Robson of Bird in Hand Street, Old Groombridge, who knew George Avis as 'codger'. (He also played football in a team with mum's brothers George and Fred, and showed us a photo of the team). George was in attendance at the death of his father William in April 1909. On trying to find out where George was buried, I have viewed the burial register at St James Church East Malling, and he was not buried there. I have also checked the following with no luck - Holy Trinity, Eridge Green, Sutton Road Cemetery in Maidstone, St Thomas in Groombridge, Snodland Council Cemetery, Tonbridge and Malling Council Cemetery, Sittingbourne Council Cemetery, Holy Trinity in Sittingbourne, St Marys West Malling, Tunbridge Wells cemetery(their data is on deceased.online). I sent off to Medway Council and they have confirmed that he was not buried at their cemeteries in Chatham, Rochester, Gillingham or Strood. I also emailed the parish administrator in Rusthall, where his mother was buried in 1928, to see if he was buried there, but he was not. Nor was he buried at the church in Withyham, where his ancestors lived, or at the Pembury burial ground, where dads mother had been buried 5 years earlier. In the 1921 census, George was working as an under gardener employed by M E Grosse of Glen Andred.
