Notes:

Christening details taken from mormons genealogy website - confirmed christening date/place and parents names of John Avis and Sarah. I can find no marriage with the mother of all his children, Susannah Walter - all the christenings of their children in Withyham show that they were all baseborn/bastards. Also confirmed christening details on visit to Lewes Records Office 2/8/2012. See his will attached dated 20/8/1806, held at National Archives Kew reference IR 26/319/33. I have traced the legatees, apart from I am not certain of the exact identity of the grandsons John and Peter Avis, each receiving 100 pounds, John Avis son John, 1760 to 1814, had a child born in 1783 called Peter with his wife Elizabeth Nash, but I can find no son born to him called John. John Avis son William, 1750 to 1796, had a child born in 1773 called John with his wife Mary Quinall, but I can find no son born to him called Peter, and also no legatee grandchildren were showing as being children of any deceased children apart from the 3 left by Johns son Peter. The 2 executors were his son Thomas Avis, and an Edward Everest. I have bought a copy of a book, Historical Notes of Withyham, Hartfield and Ashdown Forest, by Charles Nassau Sutton, rector of Withyham, published originally in 1902. From 1773 to 1806 he was a tenant of Ham, as had been his father and grandfather before him. He appears on the 1798 land tax records as a tenant at Ham of the Duke of Dorset, with tax due of 11 pounds. 16/4/2013 visit to Lewes records office found his burial date in Withyham, John Avis, farmer.
