Notes:

Christening details taken from mormons genealogy website, England births and christenings. This also gave his father's name as John. 14/6/2012 visit to Lewes Records Office viewed marriage register on microfilm, and Thomas Avis, of this parish, batchelor, and Ann Bedwell, of this parish, spinster, were married by banns on 4/5/1768. The had to leave their mark. The witnesses are difficult to read by may be William Greenfield and John Rolfe.14/6/2012 visit to Lewes Records Office also viewed burial details. Died aged 77, abode Maresfield, by George Woodward. Baptism register viewed at Lewes Records Office 31/5/2012 - Thomas was christened along with his sisters Elizabeth and Sarah - it was noted that they were children of John Avis, all bastards. Thomas is a legatee and executor in the will of his father John Avis, 1728 to 1806. He received all the residue of his fathers estate after the individual legacies had been paid. I have bought a copy of a book, Historical Notes of Withyham, Hartfield and Ashdown Forest, by Charles Nassau Sutton, rector of Withyham, published originally in 1902. In 1806 he was a tenant of Ham, as was his father before him. At the time of the 1798 land tax, he was a tenant at Sweet Mine Pits which came under Maresfield, although it is actually halfway between Maresfield and Withyham, near Nutley. The owner of the farm was John Newnham esquire of Maresfield Park. The tax due was 12 shillings.
