Notes:
Birth date estimated(pre-1837 when births formally registered). His mother was not married when she had him, but she later married William Pettit. His father was down as Arthur, a labourer, on his marriage to Ann Richardson. His death certificate shows that he died at the home of his daughter Philadelphia Staples. The address was Street End Lane, Heathfield, but on looking at a map, this was just around the corner from Little Bainden in Mayfield. On visit to Lewes Records Office 20/9/2011, found that he was buried on 15/3/1909 at St. Dunstans Parish Church in Mayfield, entry number 549 in the burial register, aged 74 years, by John H. R. Kirby. I have attached the probate I sent for for an Arthur Britt, who lived in Mayfield, and who I believe to be the father of Arthur Britt Bailey. I sent off for it in case it mentioned anything about Arthur Britt Bailey, but it does not. Arthur Britt married and had children about the time that Rhoda Bailey was pregnant with the young Arthur, and lived very close by in Mayfield. I believe that the young Arthur was born just after the bastardy bonds in the old poor laws stopped in 1834, and that if Arthur had been born a little earlier we may have found a bastardy bond for him in the parish records. I think it is just too much that our Arthur has Britt as a middle name, if Arthur Britt is not his father, as a second name was not common in the family at that time. The original photo was taken at a photography studio at 81 High Street Tunbridge Wells.
