Notes:
1-6-2011 - Isfield parish marriage register viewed at Lewes Records Office - verified marriage date to Hannah Casselden. Peters surname was written as Avice. Believe he may be on the 1881 and 1891 census at the workhouse in East Grinstead. Visit to Chichester Records Office 20/01/2012 checked out the microfilm records for the East Grinstead workhouse - Peter Avis, aged 95, who had been admitted from Withyham, died at the workhouse 22/9/1892, and was buried in Withyham(burial register for Withyham viewed Lewes 5/10/2011 and this burial was noted then). The age at death does not fit in exactly, but I do believe that this is our Peter Avis, and that it is just a case of inaccurate dates. The 1881 workhouse census shows him to be 81, and the 1891 workhouse census shows him to be 91. The 1881 census shows him as having come from Withyham, and the 1891 census shows him as coming from Marsfield in Monmouthshire, Wales. However, I think this is another mistake - he was living in Maresfield in Sussex in the 1841 census with his wife and children before she died in 1841. The 1851 census has him coming from Withyham(as did all his ancesters going back to the 1600's, and the 1861 census has him coming from Maresfield. At Chichester I checked out the dates of admittance to the workhouse for Peter over a long period in the creed register - he was always admitted from Withyham and with a religion of C of E. Admitted 10/12/1870 then discharged, admitted 28/1/1871 then discharged, admitted 27/11/1871 then discharged, then 30/12/1871, 22/1/1872, 23/3/1872, 21/11/1872, 11/1/1873, 10/11/1873. Then admitted/discharged 16/12/1875 - 24/12/1875, 12/1/1876 - 21/2/1876, 15/5/1876 - 22/5/1876, 13/10/1882 - 26/2/1883, 10/3/1883 - 20/3/1883, 20/7/1883 - 30/7/1883, 8/8/1883 - 27/8/1883, 5/9/1883 - 30/4/1884, 6/5/1884 - 26/5/1884, 4/8/1884 - 6/8/1884, 17/11/1884 - 30/3/1885, 28/9/1885 - 19/4/1886, 19/5/1886 - 12/8/1886, 8/10/1886 - 15/5/1887, 4/6/1887 - 6/7/1887, 3/10/1887 - 7/5/1888, 22/5/1888 - 20/5/1888, 7/7/1888 - 22/9/1892, when he died. Cannot find him on the 1871 census - he was in and out of the workhouse by then.14/6/2012 visit to Lewes Records Office also viewed baptism details.
